Independently licensed, master’s prepared mental health professionals, including:

Training Requirements

A minimum of 28 hours of continuing education in specific CBT topics. Learn more about CBT-C certification training requirements.

Pre-approved, 3rd party trainings that meet the training requirements for certification include:

  1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Certification Course by PESI - Certification and Consultation Included!
  2. CBT for Kids Certification Course: Trauma-Informed Interventions for Depression, Anxiety, Autism, ODD, PTSD & More by PESI - Certification & Consultation Included!
  3. Mindful CBT Certification Course: An Integrated Approach for Treating Anxiety, Depression, Trauma and More by PESI - Certification & Consultation included!

If you did not complete a pre-approved Certification course listed above, you will need to obtain approval from Evergreen that the course you have taken meets the educational standards before reaching out to a Consultant for consultation. Please submit a copy of or link to the course title, speaker, outline and learning objectives to info@evergreencertifications.com for review.

Please note that Evergreen Certifications does not offer continuing education, all training must be purchased directly through the accredited training organization. Training is not included in the certification fee.

Consultation

The applicant must present and pass overall on 2 clinical case studies in CBT-focused case review consultation sessions, with an Evergreen Certifications Approved Consultant*. The consultation sessions must be completed within 2 years of completion of education hours.

The following information should be included in the case presentation (it may be helpful to prepare with writing this information out and/or bring a transcript of the session to consultation):

  • Case conceptualization of presenting issue, including cognitions and behaviors
  • Assessment and diagnosis
  • Agenda of session, including:
    - Check-in
    - Objectives prepared for session
    - Treatment plan and goals
    - Session skill activity
    - Session summary and feedback
    - Client homework/behavioral experiment
  • Application of evidence based diagnostic specific CBT skills

To be approved for CBT-C certification, applicants must pass with an overall score of 3 or 4 in each category on the Case Consultation Form. If any scores are below this, the applicant should reach out to Evergreen at info@evergreencertifications.com for next steps if still interested in obtaining the certification.

Charles Jacob, PhD, CBT-C
Biography:
Charles Jacob, PhD, received his PhD from The Pennsylvania State University and completed a year of additional training at the Center for Cognitive Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania. He has over 15 years of clinical experience conducting and overseeing the delivery of mental health services to individuals with severe mood and personality disorders as well as their families. Dr. Jacob is an expert in Cognitive Therapy, as well as a highly regarded clinician and scholar. He has regularly delivered lectures on Cognitive Behavioral Therapies throughout the country and has been an invited speaker at universities throughout the world.

Biography:
David M. Pratt, PhD, MSW, is a New York State Licensed Psychologist with 40+ years’ experience working with children, adolescents and families. Dr. Pratt is in private practice at the Western New York Psychotherapy Services in Amherst, NY and a trainer with PESI, Inc. He is presently on faculty with the University at Buffalo, School of Social Work, Office of Continuing Education and a member of New York State, Office of Mental Health Advisory Board on Evidence-Based Treatments for Youth. He was the Principal Psychologist at the Western New York Children’s Psychiatric Center, Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University at Buffalo and Adjunct Professor/Lecturer, University at Buffalo Counseling, School and Educational Psychology department. Dr. Pratt has conducted numerous trainings in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy at local, state, national and international forums. He is the author of CBT Toolbox for Depressed, Anxious and Suicidal Children and Adolescents (PESI Publishing, Inc., 2019) and Advanced CBT Toolbox for Depressed, Anxious and Traumatized Youth (PESI, Publishing & Media, 2022).


Richard Sears, PsyD, PhD, MBA, ABPP, CBT-C
Biography:
Richard W. Sears, PsyD, Ph.D., MBA, ABPP, has given hundreds of workshops on CBT, ACT, MBCT, and mindfulness all around the world. He is a board-certified clinical psychologist in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he runs a private therapy and consultation practice, and has experience in a wide variety of clinical settings. He holds several academic appointments, including at the Department of Clinical Psychiatry & Behavioral Neurosciences with the UC College of Medicine, and has taught graduate-level CBT and case conceptualization courses for two decades. Dr. Sears is author of over a dozen books, including ACT with Anxiety; The CBT & Mindfulness Toolbox; MBCT for PTSD; and Mindfulness: Living Through Challenges and Enriching Your Life. He is also a sixth-degree black belt in Ninjutsu, once served briefly as a personal protection agent for the Dalai Lama of Tibet, and received recognition as a Zen master.

  4. Remit your initial application payment of 349.99 USD online - Fee includes consultation, does NOT include training.

Renewal

To maintain CBT-C certification, a renewal is required. After your initial 3-year certification, you can renew for 3 years. A 3-year renewal requires 18 clock hours of CBT focused continuing education.

Renewal CE content cannot be the same content used for prior renewal or initial certification

To become CBT-C certified, you must complete all requirements outlined in the certification standards. To get the most out of the consultation experience, it is recommended (though not required) to work with one consultant as that consultant will be better able to get to know your clinical skills and you will get the most out of the consultation process.

You will receive a completed Case Consultation Form from the consultant you present your clinical case to. You will receive a separate form for each case presented. Three (3) passing forms are required for certification.

Your digital badge is automatically in your online account when your certification is active.

Once your application is approved, your certification is granted for three years. To maintain certification, a renewal is required every three years.

To maintain your CBT-C certification, you need to renew your certification every three years. Re-certification training hours need to have been taken in the time since you were initially certified or last renewed. Renewals are calculated from the date that your certification was issued.

If you allow your certification to lapse for more than 2 years, you are no longer eligible to renew your certification and instead can reapply for certification.

Evergreen Certifications will accept courses that have been completed within 2 years of initial application for certification.
