Who is Eligible:

To be eligible for certification, the applicant must be independently registered/credentialed as listed below, and hold a minimum of a master’s degree in their profession.

Training Requirements:

A minimum of 18 hours of CPD specific to aging clients in the following topics:

The applicant must complete the following education criteria (total minimum of 18 hours of CPD):

Understanding of Biological and Cognitive Aging: Understanding of normal cognitive and biomedical changes associated with aging versus cognitive impairments
Assessments and diagnostic tools: Utilization of appropriate assessment and diagnostic tools that are within your scope of practice
Clinical Techniques and Interventions: Understanding of evidence-based clinical techniques and interventions for clients later in life.
Navigating Relationships: Understanding of relationships and social isolation in later life. Working with complex multigenerational family structures. Navigating intimate relationships, dating and sexuality.
Life Transitions: Understanding of common life transitions for clients later in life (e.g. retirement, caregiving stress, grief, end of life concerns)
Strengths of Aging: Working with clients later in life on the strengths of aging (e.g. resilience, wisdom, personal growth, self-compassion)
Mental Health and Physical Health Intersection: Common medical and neurological conditions, testing and treatments for clients in later life.
The Effects of Ageism: Understanding of how ageism affects social, physical and mental health. An understanding of implicit bias related to ageism.
Interprofessional Practice: Understanding the value and roles of other providers, organizations and agencies in the assessment and treatment of clients in later life. Knowing when to seek consultation or additional education.
Impact of Care Settings: Understanding of how the care setting can influence the quality of life and well-being of clients later in life.
Cultural Awareness and Competency: Understand cultural influence on working with clients in later life and how these influences affect interventions and treatment plans (spirituality, age cohort affects, historical context).
Risk Assessment and Intervention: Understanding of how to identify and manage potential risks with clients in later life (e.g. cognitive assessment, suicide, fall risk, self-neglect, elder abuse)
Legal and Ethical Consideration: Ethical and legal issues related to working clients in later life including the professionals’ responsibilities and obligations.

Suitable education sources are approved continuing education as documented by certificates of completion from the accredited training organization.

Evergreen Certifications will accept courses that have been completed within 2 years of initial application for certification.

Please note that Evergreen Certifications does not offer CPD, all training must be purchased directly through the accredited training organization. Training is not included in the certification fee.

Complete Clinical Hours:

The applicant must attest that, over the course of their career, they have completed a minimum of 100 contact hours with aging clients.

For your initial 2-year certification, please complete the following steps.

Complete a qualifying training
Remit your initial application payment of 199.99 USD online
Upload the following documents to your account:
- A copy of the candidate’s professional license
- Evidence of completion of qualifying training, in the form of a completion certificate
- A completed ECAMHS application form

Evergreen Certifications will certify applicants who meet the above requirements.

Please note: Certification does not imply endorsement of clinical competency. As a registered/credentialed professional, you are responsible for reviewing the scope of practice, including activities that are defined in law as beyond the boundaries of practice in accordance with and in compliance with your profession’s standards.

To maintain ECAMHS certification, a renewal is required. After your initial 2-year certification, you have the option to renew for 2 years. A 2-year renewal requires 8 clock hours of CPD related to aging and mental health.

Upload the following documents to your account:
- A copy of the candidate’s professional license
- Evidence of completion of qualifying training, in the form of a completion certificate

Renewal training hours need to have been taken in the time since you were certified or last recertified.

Renewals are calculated from the date that your certification was issued. If you allow your certification to lapse for more than 2 years, you are no longer eligible to renew your certification and instead can reapply for certification

Dr. Julie Erickson -

is a clinical psychologist, author, and educator focused on mental health and aging. She is the author of The Aging Well Workbook for Anxiety and Depression (New Harbinger), a CBT-based self-help resource designed specifically for older adults. She runs a thriving private practice in Toronto, providing evidence-based treatment across the adult lifespan, and serves as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Toronto, where she teaches graduate-level CBT and supervises emerging clinicians. Dr. Erickson is also a sought-after speaker, delivering workshops and continuing education programs across North America focused on adapting CBT for older adults.

Ann Steffen, Ph.D., ABPP - Ph.D., ABPP

is currently Founders Professor in Psychological Sciences at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, where she has spent her career in teaching, research, supervision and direct clinical services focused on the needs of older adults and family caregivers. At UM-St. Louis, she has served as the director of Gerontology programs and as director of clinical training for the APA-approved doctoral program in clinical psychology. Dr. Steffen is dual board-certified in Geropsychology and in Behavioral & Cognitive Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP).
